The guest artist for this year is
Jake Shulman-Ment.

Jake Shulman-Ment
Violinist Jake Shulman-Ment is among the leaders of a new generation of Klezmer and Eastern European folk music performers. His versatility as a violinist, composer, improvisor, teacher, and folk music researcher has established him as one of the world's leading practitioners of the klezmer violin. As a child in New York, Jake's immersion in Yiddish culture and the klezmer revival movement, as well as rock, jazz, and classical music, formed him into an eclectic musician with multiple influences at
work simultaneously. In an effort to explore more deeply the roots of the Jewish music he grew up with, Jake has done extensive research and study with Roma musicians in Romania and Hungary. He has synthesized his experiences and travels into an original sound, sometimes departing quite far into a realm of experimentation, but always remaining true to his deep roots in traditional Jewish music.
For more information, please visit: MySpace and CD Baby.

Tickets are free but reservations are required. Place your orders early, because this group as been “sold out” for several years in a row. The concert is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Collier County. Two years ago the Naples Klezmer Band brought world-leading Klezmer flutist, Adrianne Greenbaum to Naples. Last year, the band brought brilliant Sergiu Popa, Gypsy/Klezmer accordionist from Slovakia via Montreal.

This year the Band is happy to announce that Jake Shulman-Ment, outstanding violinist and a leader in the new generation of Klezmer and Eastern European folk music performers will be its guest soloist. Stu Warshauer, NKR band leader and fiddle player when asked “Why is this the first time the Band has brought in a guest violinist” answered  “ I never wanted people to make comparisons, but Jake Shulman-Ment is so terrific, that there is no comparison!” Last year Jake received a Fulbright research grant to collect, study, perform and document traditional folk music in Hungary , Romania and Greece He will be showcasing his talent during a 45 minute segment of the 1 ½ hour program.

The Naples Klezmer Revival Band is celebrating its 10th Anniverary in 2012. Founded and led by Stu Warshauer, violin, the band is fortunate to have a talented core of musicians including the ever-popular Jane Galler, singer and guitar, Art Isenberg    keyboard, Marty Cohn-clarinet, Perry Switzen-Bass, Arnold Saslavsky-percussion and Richard Johnson – accordion.  Each summer, members of the band travel to Montreal to learn the latest and best in Klezmer music at the annual KlezKanada Workshop. From this experience, the repertoire of the group is constantly expanding and being refined. Each of the band's individual performers will be featured during this segment, while the band brings to Naples once more Jewish music both old and new.

The band will play a special tribute to composer Solomon Small (Shmulewitz) whose grandchildren live in the Naples area and who wrote a popular Yiddish song "A Breevele Der Mamme" ( A Letter to My Mother) which was published in 1933.

Michele Gingras, Guest Clarinetist
Michelle Gingras, Clarinetist
Michele Gingras is Professor of Clarinet at Miami University in Ohio, where she was named Curry Distinguished Educator and Distinguished Scholar of the Graduate Faculty. Her book Clarinet Secrets—52 Performance Strategies for the Advanced Clarinetist was published by Scarecrow Press in 2004. As a classical musician, she performed on four continents and released a CD of duets with Emmy-Award winner Richard Stoltzman in 2008.
One day, around 15 years ago, a Jewish flute student stopped her in the halls of Miami U. and offered to loan her a recording of Giora Feidman, prominent Klezmer clarinetist. At that point, she knew nothing about Klezmer..She says " 15 minutes later  my life was changed forever". She fell in love with Klezmer music and proceeded to study with some of the top Klezmer musicians in the world including Hankus Netsky, New England Conservatory of Music, David Krakauer of the Klezmatics, Eileen Stahl, clarinetist for the Klezmer Conservatory Band and Josh Moss, founder of the Cincinnati Klezmer Project.
Michele then began to perform Klezmer and has released several CDs since 1996. She performed as a klezmer clarinetist at several International Clarinet Association Conferences (including Europe), and at venues such as Indiana University, University of Denver, University of Oklahoma, Arizona State University, Cornell University, World JamFest in Cincinnati, the Berklee Performance Center, and many others. She has published many articles on Klezmer, edited klezmer music and included three sections on the subject in her book Clarinet Secrets. Her CD, "Klezmer's Greatest Hits" is available by emailing her at: gingram@muohio.edu.
Michele says her most amazing experience in playing Klezmer music occurred in her very first performance. It was seeing the smiles on peoples' faces. She was making them happy as she played and they clapped and danced!
Now, at Miami U, Michele is passing on the Klezmer tradition by teaching the genre to her pupils. Among them are Kinneret Sagee, who has gone on to play with the Toronto-based swing sextet " The Sisters of Sheynville" and teaches on the faculty of Klezkanada and Will Cicola, who has founded several bands and piblished articles about Klezmer in Interenational Clarinaet publications. They are "rising stars who will be heard from in the future".
